Melika Mirzaei

Biography

I’m Mel. I’m a PGR based in the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) at the University of York, working with Prof. Pete Edwards on measuring soil NOx emissions using isotopes. I previously completed my Master’s in Health, Safety and Environment Engineering at the University of Tehran and my Bachelor’s in Industrial Safety Engineering at Shahid Beheshti University. My background is in air pollution and health risk assessment, and I’m excited to now be getting hands-on with lab and instrument work.
Outside of research, I love exploring nature and going on long walks, and I enjoy practising yoga to unwind. I’m always happy to chat about science, hiking spots, or anything in between!

PhD: How much do agricultural sources actually contribute to UK nitrogen oxide emissions?

This project uses stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15N-NOx) to identify and quantify sources of nitrogen oxides, particularly soil emissions versus combustion. It involves developing a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) instrument to measure NOx isotopes in real time, field studies in collaboration with the University of Warwick, and modelling of soil NOx emissions to improve understanding of their impact on air quality.
